Church Box Locks - If Only They Could Talk

Locksmithing is such an interesting trade especially if you like history. The attached photo is a church box lock, called this because the mechanics of the lock are contained within a wooden box. You see them on a lot of churches especially those built in the 1800s or earlier. They worked in a similar manner as the mortice locks of today in that the key lifted a lever and throws the bolt out into the keep of the lock. The protection for these locks however was a pattern inside of the box lock above the keyway called a ward which was shaped ornately so that only the correct key would fit the shape of the warding (hence the lovely shapes on some old church keys).

As with most locks, developments are made as a result of criminal activity and it was discovered that the warding could be by-passed by using a thinned out key this is where skeleton keys came into use and other locks started to be made to resist this type of lock attack.

Snib Removal- Nightlatch Why Do This ?

The nightlatch has been around for a long time and there is still plenty found mostly on wooden doors. Some of these have a snib on the inside which when used effectively deadlocks the door which mean even if someone has a key on the outside they are still unable to gain entry to the property.

This can cause problems when its a relative or carer for the person inside who needs medication and food etc. So what can we do to solve this problem ? At Lockkeys Locksmiths Garswood we remove the snib function so that no one can be locked out. The video above which is not an instructional video shows how we do this. If you would like a quote for a new nightlatch without the snib function then call Derek or Pam on 07855 867422 we are here for our customers.

Unusual Locks - Scandinavian Oval Cylinder

At Lockkeys Locksmiths Garswood over the years we have come across many different types of lock, but these are called Scandinavian oval cylinders and Ive only come across two since starting trading in 2009. They are unusual to find in the UK and are mainly fitted to doors supplied from Scandinavian countries hence the name. Although its not often we see them the locks are still available in the UK and after ordering one this old lock in Garswood was replaced with new.

If you would like a quote to replace a Scandinavian oval cylinder or any other lock then please call Derek or Pam of Lockkeys Locksmiths Garswood on 07855 867422 we are here for our customers.

Upvc Window Lock Parts

Upvc windows have locks in them which are multipoint locks. The lock itself is inside the window the handle opens and closes the lock which locks into place in lock keeps on the window frame. All these parts can have problems and when it happens you should deal with it straight away before it becomes problematic and possibly fails. The short video provided by our locksmith in Garswood Derek explains the parts of the window mechanism.

Deadlocking Nightlatches

Did you know that some nightlatches (commonly known as Yale locks) can be deadlocked from the outside which provides extra security when going on holiday as a example. Our Locksmith in Garswood Derek has kindly provided this video for our customers to watch and understand which locks can be deadlocked and how its done.

BS 3621 Mortice Locks How To Identify Them.

When customers apply for or renew their home insurance they will get asked the question whether some door locks are BS3621. These types of locks are normally found on wooden doors and are mortice locks, which can be sashlocks or deadlocks. Our Garswood Locksmith Derek has kindly produced the attached video so that customers can tell if they have BS3621 locks already fitted or not. Lockkeys Locksmiths Garswood We Go The Extra Mile

Or in this case the extra 40 miles. We recently did some work for a large Northwest Charity who needed a euro cylinder lock converting to a thumb turn cylinder after a fire assessment audit. The problem was that it was a Assa Ruko Flexcore lock on a master suited system so just replacing it with a new lock was not a option. With this type of situation you need to work out first of all who supplies and fits this particular make of lock which brought us to Master Lock & Safe in Southport who very kindly converted the lock to a thumbturn for us before we refitted the lock and solved the problem.

Upvc Door Lock Problems ? Is It The Lock Or The Door.

At Locksmiths Garswood we often get calls from customers regarding upvc door lock problems. The best way to discover if its your lock thats the problem or the door alignment simply open the door if you can and try to lock the door whilst its open if the lock works correctly then you know the problem is with the door alignment.

Lost Your Keys Then Change Your Locks

Losing your keys is one of the many circumstances that we suggest that you replace your locks. Sometimes keys are left in the lock when coming in from shopping or even lost when walking the dog. For peace of mind replacing your locks can be worthwhile and it may be a requirement of your insurance company.

Rim Deadlocks For Gates & Sheds

Theres still loads of these types of locks to be found on gates and sheds and although they are a reliable lock likely to last many years they are very simply made and not a very secure option if you have items of value in your sheds. We suggest that if you have these locks that you had another layer of protection such as extra locks or even a small portable shed alarm.

If you have items of value in your shed or outhouse then its always wise to whenever possible keep them chained up to a set of ladders or bikes etc and all tools should be locked in a metal box and also chained upto ladders or bikes. Lets make it harder for thieves to steal your property.

The Locksmiths Best Friend - Electric Pick Gun

The Electric Pick Gun or (EPG) for short is one of the most used tools in a locksmiths kit. Using a EPG enables cylinder locks to be picked quicker and easier than manual hand picking which benefits both locksmith and customer.

There are a number of different types of EPGs which all basically work the same way, so the locksmith has a number to choose from to suit most budgets. The one pictured is a fairly new one of the market and is a Master Pick EPG with a RPM of 17300 it provides plenty bounce for the locksmith but of course still needs skill and knowledge of the lock to use correctly. At Lockkeys Locksmith Services we provide Locksmith Training Courses for those wishing to become locksmiths or simply enhance skills for their current role.

Anti Snap Locks What Are They ?

A lot of customers have heard about anti snap locks but dont know what they are or what to look out for when buying them. Lock snapping is a method of attacking a euro cylinder lock and opening doors quickly. To defend against this type of attack lock manufacturers developed 3 star euro cylinders of which the diamond grade is the highest standard in the UK at the moment.

Please remember that although some locks may provide some protection against a snapping attack its only the 3 star euro cylinders which are specifically designed to withstand a snapping attack and these can be identified by the 3 stars on the front of the lock above the British Standard Kite Mark.
